Abstract
The article examines the works of the Russian composer S. M. Lyapunov that he designated as “songs”, namely Op. 42, Op. 51 No. 1, and Op. 69 No. 1. Depending on the texts they are based on (A. Koltsov, A. Korinfsky, and A. Khomyakov), Lyapunov employs different approaches to the expression of intonation and rhythmic patterns in his music. Well aware of the folk musical traditions of several northern regions of Russia, Lyapunov organically incorporates their distinctive features into the style of his “Russian songs”. In the course of the analysis, instances of connections between Lyapunov’s compositions and both folk songs and works of other Russian composers have been identified.
